Blind Curves: a Woman's Journey from C-Suite to Bike Seat

Blind_curves-341x500Just in time for May Motorcycle Awareness month is a book that includes a Harley road trip about a baby boomer’s unusual journey to reinvent herself and answer, “What now?”

Beautiful, fit, happily married, and successful, former Citigroup executive and motivational speaker Linda Crill was – and saw herself – as the kind of woman who could make things happen. But after losing her husband at 57, the identity Crill held closely no longer seemed to fit. Like many of us, she found herself asking, “What now?"

Desperate for change – and in a fit of rebellion – Crill signed up for a 2,500-mile road trip down America’s Pacific Northwest coast with a group of experienced motorcycle riders. At the time, Crill had never ridden anything more powerful than a bike.

"When the unexpected occurs, the answers we are searching for are often found around 'blind curves'—the unknown,” Crill says. “This trip opened my eyes to a new way of being and became the catalyst for recreating my life.”

A Magical Visit to Montana

Photo of curator Kevin-Kooistra-Manning Sometimes road trips are magical. While visiting Billings Montana last week to speak to a group of Tire Dealers I had a spare 2 hours and decided to venture out to visit the  Western Heritage Center two short blocks from my hotel. Sometimes fate and being unafraid to be adventuresome really pays off. I was the only "tourist" so the curator Kevin Kooistra-Manning, ( the only man I've ever met who's last name is his wife's maiden name he unashamedly admitted to me , "I did not know the rule on that when we got married" ), gave me a VIP tour. The only other folks at there were the local paper the Gazzette doing a photo shoot and interview with the two top artist of Montana, Clyde Aspevig & Ben Steele.

Throttle Gals - It's Not Another Men's Magazine

Throttlegals Move over, Hot Rod - Throttle Gals magazine is here to fill an all-important gap in the range of motor-centric periodicals:  this one's for the girls!  Throttle Gals magazine is all about women and the car that she races, drives, off-roads and works on - all the cars featured in the magazine are owned by passionate women drivers.

The featured vehicles range from traditional hot rods to choppers, Jeeps, trucks, race cars, dirt bikes, and on and on. It's a magazine by women motorists FOR women motorists, and Ask Patty approves!  It's a small publication, and I think it deserves the support of a readership as lovely as ours.  Occasionally, the magazine will also a female friendly male builder or shop, to give us as women a friendly place that we know we can go to.  I'm hoping that some of our AskPatty Certified Female Friendly retailers find their way into its pages.

The magazine and other related swag are available on the Throttle Gals website, and they're also on Facebook.  Get out there and support this one, gang.  This one's for us!

Ask Patty about Entrepreneurial Insanity

Ensanity CEO Jody DeVere appears in a new book, along with several friends and partners in the industry.  It's called Entrepreneurial Insanity in the Tire Industry, and if you're in the tire industry that title may feel familiar to you.

The book asks tire businesses owners to look at whether they are behaving like a "small business" or an entrepreneur.  Author Roger McManus, with input from some significant players in the tire business, defines the question and lays out a road map of Entrepreneurial Insanity - a guidebook for the small business owner to embrace the entrepreneurial spirit and truly shine. As you'd expect, this isn't a book about money - it's a book about attitude, and we're proud to be part of it.

AskPatty's Jody DeVere featured in "Influence: How Women's Soaring Economic Power Will Change the World for the Better"

Influence by Maddy Dychtwald As we enter the second decade of the 21st century, women are on the verge of attaining economic parity with men--something our great-grandmothers and grandfathers would never have imagined.  With this new economic fortitude, women have the opportunity to take previously untapped power into their hands to influence the direction of the marketplace, the workplace, the family, and worldwide leadership.

In this new book, "Influence: How Women's Soaring Economic Power Will Change the World for the Better," Maddy Dychtwald paints a captivating picture of women coming into power in America and worldwide.  Filled with breakthrough research findings, marketplace insights and inspiring examples of trend-setting women from all walks of life, this compelling multi-media presentation can be customized for a variety of industries and audiences.

Some of the topics include:

  • How women's rise to power impacts money, markets and men: the past, present and future.
  • The three stages of women's financial awareness: 1) security, 2) independence and 3) influence.
  • How women will pioneer the opportunities and challenges of the longevity revolution.
  • The new female-driven "cyclic" work/life paradigm.
  • How women are rewriting the rules of success.
  • How the new - and evolving - female/male equation changes the rules and roles at home and at work.
  • An examination of women's multiplying marketplace clout and how successful companies are responding.

Jody_devere_askpatty_president President and CEO Jody DeVere is featured heavily in the chapter "Start Your Engines: Transforming the Automotive Industry."  In this chapter, Dychtwald says "It's an industry that's owned and operated by men. Some 95 percent of the country's 20,000 auto dealers belonging to the National Automobile Dealers Association are male. And it shows."

Jody agrees with her, saying "The auto industry today is in trouble, and automakers are struggling so hard." According to Jody, automakers are "only doing lip service to women in terms of marketing and selling. When what they need to do is change, and create an environment where women don't equate buying a car or getting it serviced with going to the dentist."

Influence-300x250 Jody is joined in the chapter by other heavy-hitting women, including Marina Shoemaker,  director of General Motor's Women's Retail Network; Cheri Fleming, owner and Dealer Principal of Female Friendly Dealer Valencia Acura; and Marti Barletta, president and CEO of The TrendSight Group.
