First Look: 2017 Genesis G90 Luxury Sedan
Hyundai formally launched its new Genesis luxury brand at the 2016 Detroit Auto Show in January, with its first car -- the 2017 G90 flagship sedan -- a redesigned version of its previous Hyundai Equus.
Outside, Genesis calls its new design language "Athletic Elegance," highlighting the full-size sedan with an imposing, flat-nosed grille crowned with the winged Genesis emblem, LED daytime running lights, a bold arcing profile with elegantly creased sidelines, and standard 19-inch alloy wheels. In back, chrome dual asymmetrical exhaust tips are integrated in the lower bumper to balance the vertical LED taillights.
Inside, virtually every element of the interior focuses on the passenger’s needs, from the intuitive horizontal layout of driver controls to meticulous craftsmanship with precision stitching, and a premium material selection perfectly complimented by an elegant interior color palette. Occupants are surrounded by genuine wood accents, including the leather-stitched instrument panel.
The 2017 Genesis G90 will be offered with a choice of a 5.0-liter V-8 boasting 420 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 384 lb.-ft. of torque at 5,000 or an all-new 3.3-liter twin-turbo V-6 promising 365 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 374 lb.-ft. between 1,300 and 4,500 rpm. Both are paired with an eight-speed automatic with SHIFTRONIC® manual shift capability with conveniently located steering wheel paddle shifters to enhance shifting ease. A driver-selectable Intelligent Drive Mode mode adjusts shift character, engine torque response, and suspension damping according to the driver's style. Both engines are also with rear- or H-TRAC all-wheel drive, and while premium fuel is suggested, both engines will also run on regular fuel with only a small reduction in peak power.
Standard equipment on the Genesis G90 includes many features that would be optional on its competitors, including power door closing, haptic steering wheel, laminated acoustic glass, premium 900-watt Lexicon audio with 17 speakers and a 10-inch sub-woofer, ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, head-up display, high-resolution 360-degree multi-view monitor with steering guidelines, programmable seven-shade ambient lighting, wireless device charging, and hands-free trunk operation. The V-8 adds 12-way adjustable, ventilated rear seats and full LED headlights. Every G90 will come with ergo-designed 22-way-adjustable, orthopedically rated heated and ventilated front seats.
Underneath its stylish outer design, the G90 sedan features a broad variety of standard safety technology, to minimize risk and maximize protection for the driver, passenger, and other road users. The entire suite of available safety features include automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, smart blind spot detection with rear cross-traffic alert; lane departure warning, lane change alert and lane keep assist; driver attention alert; dynamic bending light with high beam assist; and a 360-degree multi-view monitor displayed via a luxurious 12.3-inch high-definition widescreen in the center stack, operated via a console-mounted control knob.
The 2017 Genesis G90’s smart cruise control incorporates stop-start functionality that allows fully automatic function down to zero mph in stop-and-go traffic, using a front-grille-mounted radar sensor to maintain safer, consistent spacing with the vehicle ahead in varied traffic conditions. The system can also help deploy the automatic emergency braking system should an impending collision situation be detected with a vehicle ahead.
Furthermore, the exclusive "Genesis Experience" offers amenities to provide owners with the luxury of time. Like all Genesis vehicles, the G90 elevates the ownership experience with comprehensive customer programs and an industry-best warranty that delivers first-rate customer assurance and convenience. The warranty also includes free maintenance for three years or 36,000 miles with valet pick-up and return; according to Genesis PR, that covers the entire ownership period of 75 percent of luxury car buyers. Concierge services, traffic and satellite data services, and all software updates are also included for three-years or 36,000 miles
As will all Genesis vehicles, the 2017 Genesis G90 sedan also offers the Connected Services suite to bring seamless connectivity directly into the car with technology like remote start with climate control, destination search powered by Google, remote door lock/unlock, car finder, enhanced roadside assistance, and stolen vehicle recovery. Genesis Connected Services can be easily accessed with buttons on the rearview mirror and center stack, the web, or via an exclusive Genesis owners’ smartphone app.
Official pricing won’t be set until closer to its arrival at dealerships in September, but using prices for its midsize G80 sibling, AutoWeek projects it will list just above $70,000; that's just about $10,000 less than a BMW 740i and more than $20,000 below an Mercedes-Benz S550. (And those prices are before optional equipment on these competitive models that’s standard on G90.)
