2014 Lexus IS 250 and 350 Offer More Safety Features
The new 2014 Lexus IS series includes a new multi-link rear suspension and eight-speed transmission (IS 350 RWD), while the wheelbase of both models has also been increased by nearly three inches for more rear legroom and cargo room. The 2014 Lexus IS 250 and IS 350 are equipped with V-6 engines and available All-Weather Drive for a safer driving experience.
The models also include subscription-free real-time traffic and weather on all multimedia systems -- an industry first -- and very popular for women who seem to ‘live on the road.’
The manufacturer explains that the vehicles include, “New, laser-screw welding and adhesive body-bonding techniques, along with additional spot welding, which have made the higher rigidity possible.” This should add to increased safety, however, reps were not able to indicate whether Lexus had addressed and made modifications in response to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety's (IIHS) overall Poor rating awarded to 2012 and 2013 IS models for the small overlap frontal crash test.
However there is an all-new multilink rear suspension, revised front suspension, and steering derived from the GS sedan. The IS 250 is powered by a 2.5-liter V-6 providing 204 hp @ 6,400rpm and 185 lb.-ft. torque @ 4,800rpm. The engine is matched to a six-speed Electronically Controlled Transmission (ECT) that features a sequential manual-shifting mode with rev matched downshifts in SPORT mode. The IS 350 gets a 3.5-liter V6 with D4-S direct and port fuel injection.
If you love high performance and more power, then the IS 350 features a larger 3.5-liter engine which produces 306 hp @ 6,400rpm, 277 lb.-ft. torque @ 4,800rpm. The IS 350 inherits the eight-speed, Sport Direct Shift (SPDS) automatic transmission from the IS F high-performance model. This transmission features paddle shifters which conform perfectly to our small fingers. Also available for both IS models is an electronically controlled all-weather drive system designed to help enhance traction and grip under all driving conditions by automatically varying front-to-rear torque balance.
For women who like optional drive modes both models feature a new Drive Mode Select system which features up to five driving modes. The IS 250 and IS 350 feature ECO, NORMAL, and SPORT modes. The IS 350 F SPORT features four drive modes: ECO, NORMAL, SPORT S, and SPORT S+. These drive modes are tailored to meet the driver’s preference.
The IS 250 will have a starting MSRP of $35,950 for RWD and $38,485 for AWD. The IS 350, which produces will have a starting MSRP of $39,465 for RWD and $41,700 for AWD. The base price for the 2014 IS 350 is 2.1% lower than the model it replaces.
