Tips from 21st Century Insurance: Lowering Car Insurance Costs

Whether you are renewing your car insurance or shopping for insurance for the first time, there are many options and features that can make buying the right auto insurance perplexing.

To begin with, price, coverage, and service rates vary widely state by state and by province. Age, gender, where you live, and your driving history are factors also. No one wants to pay more for auto insurance than they need to, so know all your options and what discounts you qualify for before you make your decision.

If you're shopping for a new car now, make sure to look for one with certain safety features that make the car safer, such as anti-lock brakes or airbags. Additions like these may decrease the likelihood of your vehicle being involved in an accident, which in turn will positively affect your auto insurance premiums. Asking for a higher deductible can also help keep your costs down.

Tips on Discounts

With that said, there are a number of discounts that you may qualify for that can save you on auto insurance costs:

  1. If there are several vehicles to be insured, ask for the Multiple Vehicle discount. Insuring all of them with the same company could provide you a discount.

  2. If you do not have an accident or points for tickets history, you should also be entitled to a Defensive Driver Discount. Some drivers may qualify for this discount after successfully completing a defensive driving course recognized by the applicable state's Department of Motor Vehicles or Licensing.

  3. Be sure to ask what the cost would be if you have all your policies with one company. Many insurance companies offer a Multiple Policy Discount.

  4. Younger drivers tend to have more accidents and thus pay a higher rate. No matter what your age, be sure to understand and request the Age Discounts and Good Student Discounts. You may receive a discount if you are a high-school, college or university student who receives qualifying good grades and/or makes the deans list.

  5. Advise the insurance company if you garage your vehicles, which of course means the vehicle is less likely to be stolen, less likely to be damaged, and less likely to be vandalized.

Make the Decision

Everyone wants the best price for the best product they can afford to purchase. Double-check and ask if you qualify for certain discounts while shopping for auto insurance, and if they are available to you, take advantage of them.
