Ford and Chevrolet To Receive Annual Urban Wheels Awards
On Wheels Media and an independent panel of 15 automotive journalists have announced Ford Fusion Hybrid is the 2010 Urban Green Vehicle of the Year; Ford Taurus SHO is the 2010 Urban Car of the Year; and the 2010 Chevrolet Equinox has been named the Urban Truck of the Year. These awards are bestowed each year upon the best choices for urban and suburban drivers based on multiple rounds of evaluations and voting by the panelists.
Randi Payton, On Wheels Media's president and publisher said, "The Urban Vehicle of the Year resonates with the majority of new car buyers who live in urban and suburban areas, who drive on crowded road conditions. The vehicles chosen are cost and fuel efficient, and have the performance and safety characteristics that are relevant to the consumers in Metropolitan areas."
The manufacturers will accept their awards at the 14th Annual Urban Wheel Awards, January 12, 2010, during the 2010 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS). The Urban Wheel Awards (UWA) gala event is held during Press Week of the North American International Auto Show in the Sound Board Theater of the Motor City Casino Hotel and is attended by more than 2,000 auto executives, media, suppliers, dealers, celebrities, and community leaders. The UWA also honor the auto industry for outstanding achievements in diversity and minority business development.
On Wheels Media will also honor industry leaders with Lifetime Achievement Awards and the first ever Pioneer Award at the UWA Gala. "The Lifetime Achievement Award is presented to individuals who have made monumental contributions to the auto industry, the community, and to diversity," said Payton. The awards were added to the 2010 show in order to honor those who have made a significant impact on the lives of many. Recipients of Lifetime Achievement Awards include: Susan Au Allen, president of the US Pan Asian American Chamber of Commerce; Irma Elder, CEO, The Elder Automotive Group; Roderick D. Gillum retired vice president, Corporate Responsibility and Diversity, General Motors; Juanita Ragland Doby, vice president, Human Resources, Volvo Cars North America. The Inaugural Urban Wheel Pioneer Award will be presented to Rev. Jesse L. Jackson, Sr., founder and president, RainbowPUSH Coalition, Inc.
