Mobility Reimbursement Programs and Mobility Vehicle Conversions

Braun_chrysler_entervan Most new vehicle manufacturers offer some level of reimbursement rebate to help fund a portion of mobility enhancements completed on new vehicles. We've compiled a list of programs offered by many of the leading manufacturers for modifications made to their vehicles.

Keep in  mind there are many variables involved in obtaining aftermarket mobility equipment for vehicles. We suggest you request a copy of the Department of Transportation brochure "Adapting Motor Vehicles For People With Disabilities" by calling 1-888-327-4236 or by visiting

Braun_companion_seat Most manufacturers place the responsibility of making the modifications on the owners themselves. General Motors'mobility site specifically states "You will be responsible for contacting an independent mobility equipment installer to have any aftermarket device installed in your car or truck. When selecting a mobility equipment installer, shop around and inquire about their qualifications, capabilities, experience, warranty and service practices. Ask for references. Ask if they are members of the National Mobility Equipment Dealers Association (NMEDA), or another organization that has established vehicle conversion standards." This is good advice regardless of which make or model vehicle you own.

The National Mobility Equipment Dealers Association (NMEDA) is known internationally  as an organization committed to ensuring quality and professionalism in the manufacturing and installation of safe and reliable mobility equipment in vehicles for drivers and passengers with disabilities.

•    BMW   •
BMW Group has removed the reimbursement ceiling for disabled buyers of BMW and Mini vehicles who wish to make one-time vehicle modifications to new and certified pre-owned BMW and MINI vehicles to facilitate or ease their use of the vehicle.  (Previously, BMW Group limited the amount it reimbursed buyers.)

Under the GM Mobility Reimbursement Program, a customer may be reimbursed up to $1,000 of the cost of any eligible aftermarket adaptive equipment when installed (or reinstalled) on any new and unused 2005, 2006, and 2007 model year GM vehicle purchased or leased and delivered before 9/30/06. Included GM divisions are Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, GMC, HUMMER, Pontiac, and Saturn. To take advantage of the GM Mobility Reimbursement Program, vehicles must be adapted within 12 months from the date of purchase/lease and a claim submitted within 90 days from the date of adaptation.

•    SATURN   •
Adaptive equipment buyers will be reimbursed up to $1000, including installation or reinstallation, for outfitting an eligible Saturn vehicle. Program information is available from the Saturn Mobility Program at 800/553-6000 (TTY users, call 800/833-6000).

The Ford Mobility Motoring Program provides up to $1,000 toward the cost of installed adaptive equipment on a new 2005, 2006 or 2007* Ford, Lincoln or Mercury car, van or light truck, and up to $200 on alert hearing devices, lumbar seats and running boards.

Conversions to Dodge Caravan, Dodge Grand Caravan, and Chrysler Town & Country models may be reimbursed up to a maximum of $1,000. Conversions to all other eligible Chrysler, Jeep(R) or Dodge models qualify for a maximum reimbursement of $750. Dodge Sprinter models qualify for a maximum reimbursement of $500 on wheel chair lifts. Running boards qualify for a maximum reimbursement of $400. Alerting devices qualify for a maximum reimbursement of $200. These reimbursements will not be reduced or affected by any additional outside funding. •    HONDA   •

The Honda Customer Mobility Assistance Program is proud to support the mobility needs of drivers and passengers with physical disabilities. Honda will provide a reimbursement of up to $1,000 to each eligible, original retail customer for expenses incurred to purchase and install qualifying adaptive equipment on any eligible purchased or leased Honda vehicle.

Provides cash reimbursement of up to $1,000 of the cost to the vehicle owner for aftermarket adaptive equipment, for drivers and/or passengers, when installed on any eligible purchased or leased* new 2001 or later Toyota vehicle. Refer to Assistance Guidelines and Reimbursement Application Form sections of this web site for detailed requirements. Forms are also available from your local Toyota dealer or from any adaptive equipment installer.

•    LEXUS   •
Provides cash reimbursements of up to $1,000 of the cost, to the vehicle owner, for after-market adaptive equipment for drivers and/or passengers, when installed on any eligible purchased or leased new vehicle.

Volvo_mobility •    VOLVO   •
Up to $1,000 in financial assistance toward the cost of adding adaptive equipment to an eligible new Volvo and up to $200 on alert hearing devices.
