Most Child Safety Seats Are Not Safe

Askpattylogotm1_10 by Ask Patty Staff
We want to think that our children are safe once we put them into their child safety seats in our cars, but that's not often true. Most safety seats are installed wrong and that makes their effectiveness disappear.

Recent safety laws are making it easier to use child safety seats in cars and trucks, however, according to the Detroit Free Press "as many as 90% of child seats are improperly used." That's a staggering number.

The universal child seat mounting system, LATCH, was supposed to solve any issues with incorrect installations. The LATCH system only works if your safety seat works for your cars. The Detroit Free Press states that there are "more than 100 child seats on the market and all don't work in the same in every vehicle." SO you might buy one seat that works in your car but it might not work in your spouse's car, and a large number of people don't even read the installation manual before putting a child seat in their car.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported that 94% of parents thought they had correctly installed their child safety seats with the LATCH rules, but in reality only 20% did.

Bilde As children grow, they will also need different seats. There are rear-facing seats, forward-facing seats and booster seats. Make sure you know your facts and safety rules for each type of seat before driving off with your child strapped in.

Read the original Detroit Free Press article for more information and tips, or visit The Car Seat Lady for information. You can also check out the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's site for LATCH regulations. For a more comprehensive listing, go to the 2006 listing on NHTSA's site.
