#BeTireSmart During 2016 National #TireSafetyWeek -- And All Year!

Phillip_the_tire-national_tire_safety_week-Be_Tire_SmartEach year during the last week of May, the Rubber Manufacturers Association (RMA) promotes the National Tire Safety week #BeTireSmart campaign to raise awareness about the importance of proper tire care. As RMA mascot Phillip the Tire says, "A well maintained tire is a happy tire so Be Tire Smart."

According to information from a recent RMA survey published at TireReview.com, more than 8 of 10 motorists do not know how to properly check tire pressure, increasing the driver’s risk of tire problems due to poor maintenance. Over this recent Memorial Day Weekend, AAA said that approximately 14% of roadside assistance calls were expected to be tire-related.

“Safety is our industry’s top priority,” said Anne Forristall Luke, RMA president and CEO. “Today’s tires are a high-tech marvel of engineering innovation that can last for tens of thousands of miles and contribute to better fuel economy but they need a few minutes of basic care each month to perform at their peak.”

RMA research shows that drivers need to pay more attention to their tires.

• Four out of five drivers don’t know how to properly check tire pressure.
• One half of drivers wrongly believe that the correct pressure is listed on the tire.
• Two out of three drivers do not check the tire pressure in their spare tire.
• One in three drivers do not know how to tell if their tires are worn out.

The RMA has also launched an informative new site to help consumers find out if their tires have been recalled. This online tire recall search tool will cover all of its member companies’ tire recalls since 2000. RMA members represent approximately 80% of all U.S. tire shipments. According to Forestall, “Last year, RMA led the effort to pass federal legislation to require the nation’s highway safety agency to create a searchable database of tire recalls. Until that is done, RMA will provide consumers with an online tool to help identify a recalled tire made by one of our members.”

As part of National Tire Safety Week awareness, AskPatty joins with the RMA to urge motorists to learn good tire care habits. These include checking tire pressure monthly and measuring and inspecting your tire treads before long trips, among other things.
