Mazda Joins #HungerGames Hype
Mazda is joining the hype surrounding the recent launch of this season’s most highly anticipated film, “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1” with two movie-related promotions. One is an unusual advertisement that appears to be “hacked” by District 13 supporters, and the second is a charitable opportunity for consumers to feed the hungry by designing a hovercraft for #District13.
According to uproxx.com/gammasquad, Mazda’s official TV spot is one of three television ads promoting the movie. While it appears to be a typical Mazda ad with seemingly no tie-ins to the Mockingjay movie, viewers will be surprised at the 16-second mark when Beetee, played by Jeffrey Wright, breaks into the advertisement with a pirate transmission from District 13 to Peeta. As a topical angle on the company’s annual “Drive for Good” charitable giving event, when budding vehicle designers upload a design for a utility vehicle of the future for #District13, Mazda will provide $1, up to $10,000, to FeedingAmerica.org. Each $1 donation helps provide 10 meals secured by Feeding America on behalf of local member food banks. Even though the “Drive for Good” event runs throughout the holidays and ends on January 2, 2015, entries to the #District13 design contest must be uploaded at www.mazdadistrict13.com before December 31, 2014.
