Exotics Racing: Mother's Day Gift a Dream Come True

Exotics-Racing-2014-05-03-12.23.43By Sherice Mann, AskPatty Client Marketing Manager

When my mom and I first arrived at the Exotics Racing Ultimate Driving Experience at Auto Club Speedway in sunny Southern California, we were immediately in view of the exotic supercars. We both instantly started smiling. The thought of being able to drive one of these around the track was so exciting! We parked and rushed over to the entrance, where we were greeted, checked off the list, given wristbands, and told to have fun sitting in and taking pictures with the supercars.

At the track, they had eight cars available to drive: Audi R8 V-10, Nissan GTR, Ferrari 458 Italia, Ferrari F430 F1, Lamborghini Superleggera, Lamborghini Gallardo, Porsche Cayman S, and the Porsche 997 Turbo S. I was told that at their Las Vegas location, they have even more cars to choose from, including a Lamboughini Aventador and a McLaren MP4-12C.

Exotics-Racing-2014-05-03-11.45.40I was instantly drawn to the Audi R8 V-10 while my mother was instantly drawn to the Porsche Cayman S. We each sat in our dream cars and took pictures in the driver's seat. It was building up the excitement for us, before even getting close to being ready to drive. My mom was almost as excited as I was, even though I would be the only one driving!

After taking pictures of all of the cars, sitting in them to experience their interiors, and squealing excitedly at the amazing assortment of supercars, we were led back inside for a quick class on driving safety and the track. This class was taught by a professional driver with a background and history deeply rooted in the car racing culture.

Exotics-Racing-1During the class, he went over everything from having a professional driver in the car with you, to how you let another car pass, to playing it safe while having fun. He also explained the cone system that they use to signify when you need to apply brakes, where the apex of a turn is, and hot to tell if there is a double apex turn.

Once the class was done, he took us onto the track in a Porsche Cayenne for two laps, to get us acquainted with the turns, cone signifying system, and the straightaways (going 90 mph the entire time!). During this time he was describing to us how the professional drivers would push us to our limits while still keeping safety as the main priority. We were all silent, focusing on what he was saying to us, but eagerly anticipating our own chance on the track.

Once this two-lap drive was over, we went back inside to meet our ride-along professional driver and to get outfitted with our helmets. After that, it was time to drive!

Exotics-Racing-2014-05-03-11.26.33I got in the driver's seat of the Audi R8 V-10, we got the DVD recording started, and then we headed onto the track!

During the ride, the pro-driver had all of my mirrors turned to him so that he could focus on the other traffic on the track while I focused on getting the most out of the car. He gave me tips and pointers on how to get a faster lap time, trusting the brakes, and having fun while staying safe. I definitely had fun and got the car to over 110 MPH!

After my laps were over, we took the car back in to the “pit” and discussed how I did on the track. We reflected on my nerve for going fast, knowing when to apply the brakes, and my focus on the track and how it kept us safe. Then I was given my certificate of completion and a copy of the DVD of my driving experience.

It taught me that focusing on the road when you're driving and eliminating distractions is key to staying safe out there. Knowing the limits of your car and what your brakes are capable of is important when deciding how close to drive to another car and in emergency maneuver situations. It also showed me that safety is more important than going fast. These are great tips and tools to take with you on the road for everyday driving.

Exotics-Racing-2As a woman, this appealed to me in so many ways. It gave me a break from the mundane that is everyday driving, it got me into a supercar that most people would never be able to experience, and it got me on a racetrack with the ability to go as fast I had the nerve for. My adrenaline was pumping, I was smiling the entire time, and my mom was having a great time watching me out on the track and being excited about the whole experience.

I know that my mom loved this experience and would be open to driving one of the cars herself one day. It's a great gift, even for Mother's Day! It's different, a once-in-a-lifetime experience, and is more affordable than you think.
