Volkswagen Offers a Crash Course on Makeup Application and Safer Driving
I've got a 45-minute commute to work each day along the congested 405 freeway in Los Angeles, during which time I've watched other drivers eat breakfast, read the newspaper, shave, and yes, even talk and text on their phones (even though California is supposedly a hands-free state). I've also watched other women apply their makeup in their car. And, I admit, I've even done it myself.
Because it is said that as many as half a million car crashes a year are caused by women drivers applying makeup -- in the UK alone -- Volkswagen joined forces with online fashion and makeup guru Nikkie to create a tutorial intended to raise awareness of that subject. Entitled "A crash course to shine," viewers who watched the video at Nikkie's youtube channel last week thought they were tuning in to learn how to apply sparkly makeup, and received a surprise message about the dangers of doing it in the car.
Nikkie's video channel has nearly 190,000 subscribers and boasts nearly 30 million video views. It didn’t take long for the video to go completely viral, leaving the UK and circumnavigating the globe, accumulating more than 100,000 views and more than 10,000 shares and retweets within just three days. A week later, the youtube video is now up to more than 1.2 million views with more than 3000 comments in a variety of languages
Those comments are varied, but they all circle back around to one important topic: How important it is to reduce distracted driving. Regardless of the distraction, ultimately, the true goal is to help us all focus on driving. It doesn't matter whether you are a man or a woman: Just stop doing other things, and drive.
I'm a changed driver. I've taken my makeup bag out of my car. How about you?
Volkswagen Vehicles and Safety
Many Volkswagen vehicles feature Volkswagen’s Intelligent Crash Response System which reacts instantly in the event of certain collisions by unlocking the doors, turning off the fuel pump, and activating the car’s hazard lights. (Volkswagen's Intelligent Crash Response System will only activate in a collision where the airbags deploy or safety belt pretensioners activate. Not all collisions cause airbags to deploy or safety belt pretensioners to activate.)
