had the opportunity to join a group of automotive enthusiasts and
writers at the annual 3M Auto Boot Camp in St. Paul Minnesota where
we got a good look at their latest DIY products. Once again, I was
impressed not only by the products, but by the 3M organization as a
3M has a
great group of people constantly working on new products and excited
to be working there. I still think it’s so cool that each employee
gets to spend 15% of their work time working on something they love.
This is what makes the 3M environment one of collaboration and
innovation and let me tell you, the energy there is addictive.
people think of tape when I say 3M, as someone who’s been in the
automotive industry for 24 years, I think of quality automotive
products. For 2 days we got to play and learn about the DIY products
that they have created for the average person who just wants to be
able to maintain their vehicle themselves in between the major
services that need to be done at the shop.

So let me share what I learned so you can get out there and start
doing some things on your own vehicle!

Clinics and pets and golf! Our Certified Female Friendly dealers have been busy this month educating and giving back. Summer's always a great time for a car care clinic, and our retailers love to reach out to their communities. Add to that some great recognition, a charity golf tournament, and a super-cool pet safety event and it's a pretty good month in the Ask Patty Nation!
The Jim Ellis annual charity golf tournament now enters its 12th year and helps a wide variety of charities who in the past have included Aflac Cancer Center, Boys and Girls Club of America, Children's Hospital of Atlanta, and Georgia's Center For Children's Advocacy among many others.
Brahler Tire & Lube centers of Springfield, IL held their first women's car care clinic on August 22, where they taught women some of the basics of car maintenance and more.
Potomac Falls Express Lube & Car Wash is hosting a Pet Health & Safety Day event in September featuring participation from pet-focused organizations from all around their area. Features include natural pet treats from a local pet bakery, pet health experts, pet travel safety products, and more.
Action Tire of Barrie, Ontario held an evening of education and enjoyment where they taught women the ins and outs of vehicle maintenance. From spare tires to the fluids and lubricants that make your motor run, the event included catering by Fresh-A-Fare, generous gift bags provided by Bridgestone, fantastic door prizes, giveaways, and an appearance by AskPatty's own Patricia Muir.
Mister Car Wash joined forced with FIAT of Austin to put together a ladies day event called Lipstick & Dipsticks this month, and our own Diana Claussen was there to speak! Plus - another beloved AskPatty Certified Female Friendly location, Faulkner FIAT of Harrisburg, will be hosting their own Lipstick & Dipsticks event next month!
Gatto Tires & Service's own Pam Gatto and Mike McHenry received a plaque from Goodyear representatives in recognition of 40 years as a Goodyear dealer! Wow. Time flies...
Community Tire Pros of Phoenix and Glendale, AZ was selected as one of the Phoenix Business Journal’s Diversity Champions for 2012. The Ask Patty Nation
over 1.5 million people lined the 16 mile stretch of Woodward Avenue
from Ferndale to Pontiac in Michigan and watched over 50,000 classic
vehicles cruise and create new memories of days gone by!
muscle car era of the 1960’s, people would "cruise" in
their cars along Woodward Avenue from drive-in to drive-in, often
looking for friends who were also out for a cruise, and perhaps find
an opportunity to do a little street racing or at least a chance to
"burn rubber" (or "light 'em up").
plumber Nelson House had an idea to raise funds for a local soccer
field in Berkley, Michigan. The plan was to attract somewhere around
30,000 to 40,000 people, have them bring their classic vehicles,
and to cruise on Woodward Avenue in Ferndale, Pleasant Ridge,
Berkley, Huntington Woods, Royal Oak, and Birmingham. The event was
scheduled to take place on August 19, 1995 and about 250,000 people
with classic vehicles actually showed up which of course generated
some traffic grid-lock in the area. This event has grown every
year to the extent that it is the largest single event in the United
States with over 1 million people attending every year. This year
was no exception!

In two weeks, foodies will descend on Houston
to rub elbows with some of the finest names in cooking - names like Paula, Pepin, Giada, and Chevy.
That's right - MetroCooking Houstin this year will be sponsored by none other than Lone Star Chevrolet
, not only the top Chevy dealer in Houston, but one of the top Chevy dealers nationwide. They also happen to be AskPatty Certified Female Friendly®.
When we heard that Lone Star was sponsoring a cooking show, we responded with applause and enthusiasm! You may think it sounds a little odd for a car dealership to be connected to a cooking event, but when you consider Chevy's green initiatives like the new Volt, positioning themselves to talk vehicle (and planet) nutrition alongside personal nutrition doesn't seem like such a stretch at all. Members of the Lone Star Chevy team will be at the event all weekend cooking up sizzling conversation and providing some great additions to the already impressive roster of guests.
Metropolitan Cooking & Entertaining Show
is a two-day food-lover’s
event featuring hundreds of exhibitors, cooking demos, tastings,
workshops, book signings and appearances by Food Network celebrities.
MetroCooking Houston presented by Lone Star Chevrolet
& The Houston
Chronicle will take place September 15-16 at Reliant Center. Highlights
include appearances from Paula Deen, Jacques Pepin and Giada De Laurentiis; a Regional Cooking Stage honoring The James Beard Foundation
with local chefs including Hugo Ortega, Kiran Verma, Jamie Zelko,
Ronnie Killen, Michael Cordúa and Rebecca Masson; and a shopping

Automotive Advice for Women
Motivated by the frightening statistics related to
distracted driving, AT&T has created the “It Can Wait” campaign to focus on
educating the public – especially teens – on the dangers of texting and driving.
AT&T has also established a “No Text on Board – Pledge Day” on Wednesday
September 19, 2012 to encourage others to make a lifelong commitment to never
text and drive.
In a CNN.com article translating the results of
Internet & American Life Project, in 2010, 20% of all drivers
admitted to texting or sending an e-mail while driving, double the number from
the year before. However, according to an
AT&T survey, teens currently report doing so at more than twice that
rate, with 43% admitting to texting or sending an email while driving.

My hands were clenched and wet with perspiration as the small commuter aircraft touched down in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Coming across the Sandia mountains to the savanna of “Duke City” is always a bumpy ride due to the air currents in this metropolitan region, named for the 8th Duke De Albuquerque of Spain, who financed the expedition that put Los Ranchos de Albuquerque on the map, in 1660. The winds were whipping even more so, the day I flew into New Mexico’s largest city, at the start of my recent journey to drive three different models of the all-new 2013 Mercedes GL-Class. Our destination was located some two hours northward in trendy Santa Fe; flying into Albuquerque gave the opportunity to begin the ride-and-drive immediately upon landing, by selecting one of the triumvirate of new GL models as the conveyance.

Despite the leaps and bounds the technology is making, there is no shortage of “when will ...?” questions directed towards designers of the Electric car. “When will I be able to charge it outside of major cities?”, “When will I be able to charge it quickly?”, even “when will it be fashionable to drive one?” By far the biggest of all of these questions, and the one most regularly asked is the one this post aims to answer. When will the Electric Car be affordable?

Girls show they have what it takes at Fastimes Indoor Karting Track in Indianapolis, Indiana with a foot of lead!
Glass Hammer Racing (also known as www.beatbyagirl.org) hosts a program called the Glass Hammer Racing Experience. As a sponsored GHR driver I was asked to go out to Indy this past November and instruct the girls participating. I love this program because it’s focused on individual development and setting goals. While some girls may have the interest and talent to progress to a professional auto racing career, GHR Experience focus is on providing each girl with the opportunity to develop her individual skills at a pace which will be both challenging and rewarding.
As females in the industry we already have obstacles to overcome. Well let me tell you, and I’ve got my girlfriends to back me up – given the opportunity – women could help advance the sport of racing, the industry and open doors from young women around the world. GHR sole purpose is to give guidance and help elevate young women early on in their careers to help them reach their fullest potential.

Thanks to airbags, stability control systems and ABS, today's cars are safer than they ever have been. But these safety technologies are advancing quickly, and now we are beginning to see safety technology that actually acts on behalf of the driver to reduce collisions.
Case in point: some cars can stop themselves when they sense an obstruction. Volvo's "City Safety" technology, available in several of the company's 2013 models, will bring the car to full stop when it detects an object in front of the vehicle, and a similar system soon to be introduced in the 2013 Lexus LS460.
