THE DREAM LIVES ON AT THE 16th ANNUAL WOODWARD DREAM CRUISE
During the post-war era, people would "cruise" in their cars along Woodward Avenue , from drive-in to drive-in, often looking for peers or friends who were also out for a cruise, and perhaps find an opportunity to do a little street racing or at least a chance to "burn rubber" (or "light 'em up").
In 1994, plumber Nelson House had an idea to raise funds for a local soccer field in Berkley, Michigan. The plan was to attract somewhere around 30,000 to 40,000 people, have them bring their classic vehicles, and cruise on Woodward Avenue in Ferndale, Pleasant Ridge, Berkley, Huntington Woods, Royal Oak, and Birmingham. The event was scheduled to take place on August 19, 1995 and about 250,000 actually showed up which of course generated some traffic grid-lock in the area. This event has grown every year to the extent that it is the largest single event in the United States with over 1 million people attending every year. This year was no exception!
The official event is always the 3rd Saturday in August; however the classic vehicle enthusiasts have virtually taken over the activities from the Sunday thru the Friday before the “Official Cruise”. Car clubs can be seen meeting at the local driven-ins and restaurants where the coordinate their own cruise up and down Woodward Avenue. It is such an emotional sight to see large groups of like vehicles line up and head out on the highway and makes their way down the very 1st paved road in our country. There are car clubs representing the earliest vehicle to be created like the Model T, the muscle cars like the GTO, Chevelle Supersport, Dodge Rams, and Ford Mustangs etc from every year they were produced, to the hottest sports cars coming off the assembly lines today. You will see muscle cars, street rods, custom, collector, and special interest vehicles dating across several decades.
Those who like to watch the WDC set up chairs and open sided tents for shade along the 20 mile stretch of the designated route (which now extends to Pontiac) and watch history continue to make itself as somewhere around 40,,000 classic vehicles make their way past the spectators. The majority of the cars on display and on the Avenue are those that were available and prevalent during the 1950s, 60s and early 70s. The restaurants are packed, the sponsors have constructed their private viewing areas, and spectators with their portable barbeques and coolers can be found up and down the cruising route.
If you are looking for a great family outing and a walk down memory lane, make your way to Woodward Ave in Southeast Michigan the 3rd Saturday in August. If you have a special vehicle, bring it with you and join a million of your friends from all over the Unites States and the globe for the WOODWARD DREAM CRUISE. It will bring you back in time and bring you back to the event year after year!
Thank you WOMC radio for playing those oldies and thank you Nelson House for the wonderful memories that are created every year due to your visionary creation.
