FRAM washable air filter helps eliminate need to purchase disposable air filters

Synwashoncar Long-life products are beneficial for a number of reasons: they can save money over an extended period and typically utilize more advanced technology. These are two reasons the Fram brand wanted to develop a long life air filter product for today's average automotive do-it-yourselfer. The new Fram SynWash long-life air filter, which is designed to last the life of a vehicle, does more than provide value for dollar, its use could help eliminate the number of disposable filters that find their way into today's overflowing landfills. Possible Father's Day Gift? Maybe!

Designed to perform 20 times longer than a standard-grade disposable air filter, the Fram SynWash long-life air filter features SynWash fiber technology, which enables the filter to be washed for like-new performance. The product -- which also features a heavy gauge corrosion-resistant stainless steel screen, a high-density gasket for increased durability, and filters 99 percent of harmful particles -- helps eliminates the need for consumers to purchase a disposable filter every year.

"It's recommended that consumers should change their air filter once a year. By installing a washable long life filter, like the SynWash filter, a motorist can save money on annual filter replacement while at the same time help cut down on the number of filters that are disposed of each year," says Craig Hamilton, product manager for the Fram brand.

As for what to tell techs at regular auto maintenance visits: Many shops these days are pretty savvy and do a good job of collecting information about their customers and the vehicles they service. Motorists that have a washable filter simply need to notify their normal repair shop so that they can make note of it in their file and know that air filter maintenance won't be necessary since that is something the driver handles herself.

The SynWash filter comes with an easy-to-use washing tool. The product can be cleaned using a garden hose and liquid dish soap and reinstalled in just a few simple steps. It is an activity that the average motorist should be able to handle in just minutes.

"Consumers want products that provide value. In our research, this filter product was extremely appealing since not only does it feature advanced and durable technology, but it pays for itself while letting the driver determine how often it should be cleaned," said Hamilton. "Some consumers may choose to clean it once every six months, others once a year. At an average suggested retail price of $24.97, the Fram SynWash long life air filter pays for itself after just three cleanings."

Changing, or in this case cleaning, a vehicle's air filter regularly can also help increase fuel economy. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, replacing a dirty air filter can improve gas mileage by up to 10 percent. At $2.50 per gallon of gas that could mean up to $5.00 in savings every time a motorist completely refuels.

Fram says its SynWash long-life air filter is available for about half of the vehicles on the road today, and that it can be found at a number of automotive and mass merchandise discount stores such as CSK, Meijer, Wal-Mart and O'Reilly Auto Parts.
