Interview With Joy Sherman - Ms. Motorcars
Joy Sherman's grandfather started his first dealership in Connecticut in 1925 with a simple philosophy in mind: Treat customers like members of your family, with honesty and respect and they will remain your customers. Joy's father went on to open dealerships of his own as well as two of her uncles and several cousins! It's no wonder Joy became involved in this business.
Joy attended Northwood Institute and received her certification in dealership
management. She started in the business delivering vehicles to the customers and became very familiar with the paperwork involved. She worked in new and used vehicle management, then in the service department. As she moved into different jobs within the dealership, she always took care of the customers. Where ever they needed assistance, Joy was always there to help. With over 15 years of experience, her customers saw a level of competence and trust which continues today.
Joy now runs an automotive consulting business directed at women, Ms.Motorcars. Joy and Ms. Motorcars offers advice on the type of vehicle most suitable for your needs, will negotiate for you for the best price, review your sales documents at delivery before you sign, and empower you and give you the satisfaction that you got the best deal!
ASK PATTY: What are the challenges for you as a women working in the automotive industry?
Joy: Not many, it's a wide open opportunity for women! It's important to not get caught up in the stereotype of what men think women "should" be doing.
ASK PATTY: Can you tell me a little bit about your company Ms. Motorcars?
Joy: I help women, senior citizens and some men (when they are honest in admitting they might not know it all) in the selection, price negotiation and purchase of a car.
ASK PATTY: What are the challenges you face as a woman owning your own automotive company?
Joy: I think the usual challenges anyone has in owning a business. I don't think it's gender based. In fact, as I stated above, the automotive world is wide open for women. Being single with no children, perhaps I don't have the challenges women in that situation might have.
ASK PATTY: What if any are the big changes you are seeing today in how vehicles are being marketed to women?
Joy: While most dealers in the industry know the importance of the female marketshare, I've
yet to experience it fully when my customers and I go shopping. It's still very much a man's
world when a woman steps into the showroom. Dealers constantly have to come up with creative ways to make more profit. Unfortunately, the unaware customer taken advantage of and ends up paying more for their car.
ASK PATTY:Tell me about your most recent personal experience buying a vehicle. What vehicle did you buy, and why did you buy?
Joy: My personal experience was a good one. I purchased a Lexus. The General Manager was involved. He quoted me a price for a vehicle his salesman brought up to the front. It was a more expensive vehicle--not the one he was thinking of--and he had to honor the price he quoted me. It was a rare experience that doesn't happen very often!
ASK PATTY: What is one piece of “good” advice you would give women before they buy a new vehicle?
Joy: Don't be intimidated and don't answer the question, "Where do you want your payments to be?"
