Ask Gayle Clark

Gayle_clarkpicture_001_2_1

The on-going achievement of any successful businessperson requires excellent strategies, strong focus and a vision for the future, which is in full supply when meeting Gayle Clark. After years of experience as a Medical Office Manager and OSHA Program Coordinator for Manor Medical and Cape Health Plan, Gayle chose to enter the Motor Coach arena in 1997 when alongside her husband Julius, she became Co-owner and Assistant Director of Marketing and Sales for Motor City Transport. The move was the beginning of an exciting and significant career choice for Gayle, as new windows of opportunity began opening for her in the motor industry.

By 2002, a new arm of Motor City Transport was launched when it became Motor City Sales and Services. This eventually led to Motor City Sales and Services, L.L.C., a multi-faceted Automotive Care Center offering everything from oil changes and brake jobs to tune ups and automotive detailing services. Before long, the company had become an associated tire dealership for Michelin Tires, as well as developing a dealership association with the U-Haul Company.

That was the beginning of Gayle’s exposure to the auto industry, which placed her in the unique position, and gave her the ability to gain insight into the automotive arena. In her desire to break down barriers, while at the same time supporting women with the purchasing of new and used vehicles as well as caring for their own personal means of transportation, Gayle was inspired to launch a “Women’s Hands-On Automotive Basic Maintenance Class.” Today, the unique class serves as a powerful support for women eager to understand and care for their own cars. Since its inception Gayle has been committed to assisting others, successfully promoting the class as a vital tool in helping women in today’s high tech society. Adding to her long-range vision and attention to detail, Gayle graduated from the National Institute of Technology. She also earned a number of awards including a ‘Crisis Prevention Certificate’ from the Crisis Prevention Institute, Inc., as well as ‘The Essentials of OSHA Compliance,’ and the ‘Executive Achievement Award’ from Nutrition for Life International. Characterized as a woman of integrity, honesty and quality, Gayle attributes her success to her strong Christian faith along with the love and support of her husband and family consisting of five children and a new grandbaby. When not busy with her many responsibilities Gayle takes great pleasure in painting, reading and traveling.

Ask Debbie Lee

Debbie_lee2

Debbie Lee’s career in the automotive industry started in 1981 18 years old while caught in a dilemma on which basketball scholarship to accept. So with a hurt knee and no clear picture in front of her she answered an ad in the newspaper that read “lot boy wanted”. She took that job and starting her introduction into now 25 years in the industry. Debbie started out washing vehicles, learning inventory control, detailing vehicles, making deliveries and doing all the so-called “lot boy” jobs they could find. She LOVED it! So, as the wheel turns so to speak, Debbie moved through various jobs at that dealership learning all she could. Three months later she was in management. Two years later, Debbie started her own detailing company, now known as Professional Car Care that provides detailing services to automotive and recreation vehicle dealerships throughout Orange County, Los Angeles County and Riverside County. They clean an average of 5,000 vehicles per day in one form or another. Many of those vehicles are from clients we have serviced since 1983. We also provide cleaning services for many automotive and RV shows and events. Debbie is very active in my community, environmental organizations and classes, continuing education and the daily hands-on running of my three companies. Along with Professionals Car Care Debbie also owns Compliance 1st Cleaning, and Total Satisfaction a line of private labeled detailing products that will be available summer 2006.

Car Advice from a Woman What most of us need from a car guide is clear, practical advice. That’s what readers will find in Mary Jackson’s Car Smarts: An Easy-to-Use Guide to Understanding Your Car and Communicating With Your Mechanic. Jackson says that she felt powerless when dealing with car repair shops until she moved to a small town in Vermont and took a job in a local body shop. Here are some of Jackson’s tips for dealing with mechanics and choosing shops to work on your car. Research repair shops through word of mouth and auto club. Don’t just look for the closest shop. Check out shops’ reputations through the Better Business Bureau or Consumer Complaint offices. Don’t wait to choose a shop until you are in need of major repair work—test the shop first with a minor repair or service. Make sure the shop has diagnostic computers needed to analyze today’s computerized vehicles, and skilled technicians to run them. Check out technicians’ certification and credentials. Choose a shop where you feel you are treated well and fairly. Compare prices among specialty and independent shops. Determine guarantees. Keep accurate records of your car’s repairs, maintenance, fuel economy, and the like. Communicate your car’s symptoms clearly to the technicians.

Who's more car-care savvy?

Women who turn to men for car-care advice may not be getting good counsel as often as they think. A national survey sponsored by Jiffy Lube International found that while 69 percent of men and 64 percent of women think men know more than women on the subject, their responses to basic car-care questions tell a somewhat different story.

“With peak driving season approaching and gasoline prices rising, we decided to see if men really have any bragging rights when it comes to getting the most out of your vehicle — and every gallon,” said Jiffy Lube International technical expert Mark Ferner.

When asked where a vehicle’s proper tire-inflation pressure information is located, 67 percent of men and 45 percent of women said on the tires’ sidewalls. In fact, that’s wrong. “Proper tire pressure is vehicle-specific,” Ferner said. “Tire sidewalls list the maximum pressure recommended by the tire manufacturer. Proper tire pressure information for a vehicle is found on a decal typically in the vehicle’s door jamb or in the vehicle owner’s manual.”  Twenty-two percent of women — more than the 16 percent of men — realized the correct tire pressure is not on the tire sidewall, wheel rim or wheel well.
