"Women's Automotive Basic Maintenance Class"
Many people often ask me about the "Women's Automotive Basic Maintenance Class" and I love to tell the story of its conception and birth.
A few years ago, my husband had the ideal to start a automotive repair center, in addition to the motorcoach business we were currently operating. This would be the beginning of something wonderful......
After a few months of being a woman in the automotive repair center business, I found it in many ways to still be considered a male-dominated arena [on this level anyway] I began to view daily operations, and customer service practices more differently.
I noticed that the male customers were treated differently than the women, mostly because most men had more knowledge and information about their automobiles, and overall it was a topic alot of men feel comfortable and have had more experience with than women.
I also found a very small number of women that did in fact have knowledge about cars, and were very savvy when it came to their automotives. However, it was interesting to find that the majority of women did not know very much at all about their vehicles, or the importance of a good maintenance program. Many women would usually bring along a brother, husband or male for support and advice.
The reality is that men and women are different, and the approach we take with them really does mean alot. I wanted to do something which would help women, so I began my mission to make Motor City Sales and Service a "women-friendly" enviorment. We literally tore down walls in our service center to make a pleasant lounge area, for all customers, but especially for the women and their children to be comfortable while they waited for repairs to be completed.
Upon many conversations with the women, I found that many felt comfortable with us because we took the time to discuss and explain every aspect of the service procedures, answered their questions, both big and small, and overall had compassion to understand the issues and concerns which most women today face. How much will it cost? Will I be able to take my children to and from school tomorrow? etc...
In addition, I found that many women are interested and want to know more about cars, especially their own, but if their is no one to teach or show them what to do, how then can they learn?
If you were not taught by a father, husband or brother and did not desire to attend a automotive school or program, what options do you have?
After talking to my husband, a few mechanics and close friends about my personal thoughts and feelings, I finally put the vision on paper, created the outline, picked the dates and began the class.
The birth of the "Women's Automotive Hands-On Basic Maintenance Class" was launched, and has been very successful.
This class is very unique, because it is a reality-class. Taught inside of a real automotive garage. You learn hands-on how to change a flat tire, how to check and change oil, fuses and more.
As you can see, I am very excited about these classes because they truly meet a great need for women who desire to learn about their personal vehicles, in addition to assisting them in saving money and their valuable time.
